About Legal Aid

Legal Aid is free legal assistance provided to people who cannot afford legal representation.

Who Qualifies for Legal Aid?

Eligible Persons:

  • Income below UGX 500,000 per month
  • Unemployed persons
  • Women and children
  • Persons with disabilities
  • Elderly persons (60+ years)
  • Refugees
  • Persons facing death penalty
  • Persons charged with serious offenses

Cases Covered:

  • Criminal cases (serious offenses)
  • Civil cases (land, family, employment)
  • Human rights violations
  • Land disputes
  • Domestic violence
  • Child custody/maintenance

How to Apply for Legal Aid

Step 1: Visit Legal Aid Clinic

  • Located at ULS Secretariat
  • Or visit partner clinics
  • Regional offices available

Step 2: Intake Interview

  • Explain your case
  • Provide personal information
  • Financial assessment done
  • Means test conducted

Step 3: Document Submission

  • National ID or birth certificate
  • Proof of income (or lack thereof)
  • Case documents (charge sheet, summons, etc.)
  • Land titles or tenancy agreements (if land case)
  • Marriage certificate (if family case)

Step 4: Assessment

  • Merits of case assessed
  • Means test confirms eligibility
  • Case allocated to lawyer

Step 5: Representation

  • Lawyer assigned
  • Case handled free of charge
  • Regular updates provided

What Legal Aid Does NOT Cover

Success Stories

Case 1: Land Dispute Resolution

A widow in Eastern Uganda was facing eviction from her matrimonial home. ULS legal aid helped her assert her rights under the Succession Law. The matter was settled through mediation, and she retained her home.

Case 2: Wrongful Dismissal

A worker was unfairly terminated without pay. Legal aid intervened, and the employer paid compensation including terminal benefits.

Case 3: Child Custody

A mother was denied access to her children after separation. Legal aid helped file for custody and access rights. The court granted joint custody.
